In-Between 5-7-1
Seon's In-Between 5-7-1 series begins with an exploration of her nomadic identity, through which she encounters a deeply rooted Korean sensibility within herself. This sensibility extends beyond ethnic identity, referring instead to an inner essence shaped by sincerity, longing, and a cultural worldview grounded in Eastern philosophy, particularly the principles of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements.
Within this framework, she explores the duality of light and darkness as interconnected forces rather than opposites. Light represents hope, renewal, and positive energy, while darkness signifies transformation, healing, and growth. These forces continuously interact, forming a natural cycle in which each gives meaning to the other.
A key motif in this exploration is the siru, a traditional Korean earthenware vessel in which bean sprouts grow in darkness before emerging as bright yellow shoots. This process reflects her understanding that creation arises through contrast, and that new life can emerge from conditions of absence and concealment.
For Seon, the siru is not merely a functional object but a symbol of resilience, renewal, and hidden vitality within change. Through this motif, her work investigates the unseen forces that shape existence and the processes through which transformation unfolds in everyday life.
